Lord of the Flies. Character Profiles.

After reading Chapter 1, The Sound of the Shell, create character profiles for the following characters:

  • Ralph
  • Piggy
  • Jack.

You should use these 4 categories for each character:

          • Appearance
  • Personality and behaviour
  • Background
  • Relationships with others.

Find quotations from the text that reveal things about each category, and make brief notes about what the quotation indicates about the character.

Use at least one page in your book for the profile of each character so there is plenty of room - we will add to the character profiles as we read.

Below is a template profile for Ralph, which you can use as a guide - you will notice that the 'appearance' category is filled out, to help you get started:

Spoken Language - Junior Apprentice

Here is the clip to go with your transcript.  Play the clip from 4 minutes in.

Your question: How do contextual factors influence the language used in the 'Junior Apprentice' transcript?

Use your spoken language glossary to help you identify the spoken language features used.  Remember to follow the steps:

  1. Identify the spoken language feature used.
  2. Speculate about what may have influenced the speaker to use the feature.  Think of more than one reason.
  3. Explain the effects the spoken language feature has on the audience.  Remember, there are two audiences - the people in the boardroom and the viewers watching at home.
